It's A Motherfucker
it's a motherfucker
being here without you.
thinking 'bout the good times,
thinking about the bad
and i wont ever be the same
it's a motherfucker
gettin' through a sunday
talking to the walls
just me again
but i wont ever be the same
i wont ever be the same
it's a motherfucker
how much i understand
the feeling that you need someone
to take you by the hand
and you won't ever be the same
you won't ever be the same
This is a really sweet, straight talking song from E. Theres no nonsense here, no playing around. The simple, pained keyboard tune mixes with quiet strings which whisper of pain and anguish. Over the top, E sings simply, honestly. The song is all pretty prosaic, nothing too fancy here. Even the strings are devoid of any real flourish or energy. The whole song just hits you with a wave of sadness.
As it's so direct, there is little need to really expand on the lyrics too much. To me, it is about E lamenting some great loss. That feeling of losing someone, and losing part of yourself with them, is familiar with me - and I expect to many others. With one persons passing, you know you can't be the same again. You can't be who you were around that person; you can't feel the same about that person anymore, therefore part of you will be different. Thats partly what E is singing about, the changes of great loss. And it's a motherfucker. That simple. I guess you have to have been there to understand. Before my own loss, I couldn't really understand this song.
There are other ideas here, also associated with loss. Loneliness - talking to the walls because there is no better company. Getting through a Sunday when there is nothing to do - no work to do, no-one to see, no where to be. Just time to contemplate the full agony of the loss. And that's a motherfucker. There is also the feeling of needing help, needing someone to take you by the hand. The trick here, of course, is that when you lose someone special, there is no-one else to take you by the hand. No-one good enough, no-one close enough. It's a real motherfucker alright.
The brilliance of this song is that it ties down the pain of loss almost completely. The music paints the picture, sets the scene, and opens up the heart to listen; while the lyrics tell the story and share the pain. Yet again, E has created beautiful freak here.
