Smile girl, frown girl,
Are you ignored?
You enter so quietly,
Closing the door.
Relax girl, breathe girl,
Maybe this time.
Someone must notice
You've done no crime.
Happy girl, sad girl,
On your way home.
As hard as you tried,
You're walking alone.
Pretty girl, lonely girl,
Where will you go?
Keep up that smile,
No-one will know.
Oh poor girl, sorry girl,
You're always watched.
But they all assume,
Nobody stops.
Shopping Trip
Pint of milk, pot noodle,
Asda ready meal (for one),
Biscuits (chocolate), apple strudel,
Some fruit juice and I'm done.
Check-out girl smiles sweetly.
Nod, reply, you're alright.
Exit door opens easily,
Exit to cold January night.
Then it's shouts and threats
On dark street corners.
Now punching, kicking, theft.
Left alone with quiet murmurs.
Back to store, same shopping trip.
Add extra chocolate, ease the pain,
Frozen peas for the split lip.
Limp to counter, her again!
The smile curious this time round,
While bleeping food is digitised.
Spirits lift from the ground:
So nice to be recognised.
Crumpled Note
Dearest Housemate,
I have no right for concern
Over your newly bought cigarettes.
I'll have no right for regrets
Once you move from our home.
I have no right to wait,
Gazing sleepless into darkness.
And I have no right to be jealous
Of those with whom you intimate. But forgetting myself, I yearn
To reach out, to take your hand,
To somehow make you understand
How your sweet smile can burn.Signed in care,
hope, despair, X
